Strategic advisory

Senior technology expertise for consequential decisions.

Not every organization needs an ongoing CTO relationship. Some need an experienced operator to assess an environment, challenge a proposal, shape a roadmap or lead a defined piece of change. VanDien takes those engagements without diluting the seniority of the work.

Advisory areas

Six ways to bring senior judgment into the room.

Technology strategy

Architecture, operating model, roadmaps, budgeting, organization design and the decisions that connect them.

Infrastructure and cloud

Azure, Microsoft 365, hybrid infrastructure, networking, endpoints, backup and operational resilience.

Cybersecurity

Security assessments, identity, controls, incident readiness, sensitive-data exposure and third-party risk.

AI and automation

Enterprise AI architecture, secure adoption, governance, workflow automation and private or local AI where it belongs.

Engineering

Software development, integration, internal tools, automation and prototypes that test the hard part before a large commitment.

Independent review

An executive assessment for owners, investors, boards or management teams facing a decision with no neutral technical voice.

Engagement models

Ongoing leadership, defined work or a special situation.

The model follows the responsibility. Each engagement has a clear owner, written scope and direct principal involvement.

The commercial terms follow the work in the same way. Ongoing leadership is usually held on retainer, defined work is priced as a project, and a one-time engagement can run on time and materials.

01

Fractional CTO

Ongoing executive ownership of strategy, risk, budget, vendors, team and reporting.

02

Strategic advisory and projects

A defined assessment, roadmap, implementation or engineering outcome with a clear end state.

03

Special situations

Due diligence, leadership transition, incident advisory, recovery, regulatory preparation or a major vendor decision with a hard deadline.

Who you are working with

Strategy from someone who has owned the outcome.

The advice is grounded in three decades of operating responsibility across hedge funds, investment banking, cybersecurity, infrastructure, vendor portfolios, AI deployment and hands-on software engineering. The person in the first meeting is the person who does the work.

Common questions

How is an advisory engagement scoped?

We begin with the decision, outcome and deadline. The proposal states what will be reviewed, who needs to participate, what will be delivered, the commercial basis (a retainer, a project fee or time and materials) and what is explicitly out of scope.

Can you implement the recommendations?

Yes, when it serves the client. Implementation is quoted separately, and the recommendation is written so your own team or another provider can execute it without us.

Are you independent of technology vendors?

Yes. VanDien resells nothing and takes no referral fees. Advice is paid for by the client, which keeps the incentives legible.

Do you work outside financial services?

Yes. Alternative investments are the primary specialization, but the underlying work applies to organizations with complex technology, sensitive data, multiple providers or a consequential change under way.

Can an advisory project become a fractional CTO relationship?

Yes, if ongoing ownership is what the findings call for. It is also perfectly normal for the work to end with the agreed deliverable.

Bring the decision that needs an independent, technically credible answer.
